Akemashite Omideto Gozaimasu!

A year of big changes
2012 will be remembered, by me at least, as a year of big changes; not all bad, but not all good either. Still, you take life as it comes, for in truth what other way can you take it? Navigating your way through life is a lot like finding your way through training, both require you to take responsibility, and both demand subtly of thought and action in order to flow smoothly.

Recognition seems to be a big thing for many karate-ka, and yet so many continue to do little that would see them being taken seriously; perhaps they want to be recognized as something other than serious...a karate genius perhaps? A master of kata and bunkai, or maybe a lethal street fighter; these are the goals many obviously aspire to these days, why else would they attach themselves to those individuals who market themselves that way?

It's a new year, a fresh start, a time to reflect on what you have been doing; a chance to change the thoughts and activities that did little to help you make progress, or find contentment. An opportunity to dispense with the third-party; that person or circumstance that you blame when things don't work out quite as you would have liked. To be recognized as anyone worthwhile in life, or karate, maturity and authenticity are mandatory.

The readership of this blog has risen to well over 8000 each month. I don't know if that's a lot or a little, but I sometimes wonder how many of you who stop by to read the posts are doers rather than dreamers? If this blog provides inspiration, that's good, but, if it proves how wrong I am about karate then that's even better (for you)....for it means you're right (right?).

With a whole new year stretching out before us, lets all see if we can improve our lot in life; lets see if we can grasp responsibility for ourselves and our karate with a firmer grip than last year, and move on from here to a better place. I wish you good luck in your efforts!
